Major beauty brands and industry leaders are convening in New York on September 23 for a collaborative sustainability event. Organized by the Green Beauty Community Foundation (GBCF), the gathering aims to make environmental practices more practical and accessible for salon professionals.

Hosted at amika's Brooklyn office, the event is part of the foundation's 2026 Green Salon Impact Tour. Official partners include amika, Green Circle Salons, Innersense Organic Beauty, John Paul Mitchell Systems, Pivot Point, Sustain Beauty Co., and Ulta Beauty. Each partner will contribute a distinct piece of the program, from technical education to hands-on sustainability activations.

Partner Contributions and Focus

The program is designed around the professional salon ecosystem, with each partner focusing on a specific area of sustainability.

Attendees will explore topics like responsible ingredient sourcing, waste recovery, water conservation, and sustainable salon operations. The afternoon will feature a moderated discussion examining the industry's progress and the obstacles slowing wider adoption of sustainable practices.

A Forum for Collective Action

Daniel Johnson, Founder and Executive Director of the Green Beauty Community Foundation, highlighted the need for collaboration. "Individual companies throughout beauty have been doing meaningful sustainability work for years," Johnson said. "What has been missing is a place where those efforts can come together around the professionals actually working behind the chair."

The event centers on a guiding question: "Who are you sustainable for?" Professionals are invited to connect sustainability to their communities and share the challenges they face when trying to make more sustainable choices. The collaborative format is intended to reflect the perspectives of stylists, salon owners, educators, brands, retailers, and sustainability organizations rather than a single company's view.

Gathering Insights for the Future

The foundation plans to collect attendee perspectives on sustainability priorities, terminology, barriers to change, and the resources beauty professionals need. These findings are expected to inform future education and industry programming. The larger goal is to create a neutral space where commercially competing organizations can collaborate on environmental challenges no single company can solve alone.

The event is not presented as a solution but as a forum for sharing what works and identifying persistent difficulties. It will conclude with networking and a rooftop reception overlooking New York City.
